I went to college in Peoria where Avanti's was king. However, my colleagues told me I had to properly compare the torpedo. I ordered the half size which was good. Full size looked huge! Lunch combo was with chips and a drink. Bread was so fresh! Staff were so friendly! Plenty of parking. No bathrooms, so I did walk across the street to the gas station. I definitely would eat a sandwich there again when in town.

Stopped at Huck's for gas, saw the spaghetti house and knew we had to stop. Guy behind the counter was extremely friendly, the spaghetti dinner for 12.29 comes with a large serving of spaghetti and an absurd amount of garlic bread, as well as a salad or drink. The food was great, the service was great and the price was great. Highly recommend the spaghetti house.

I've been living in Normal/Bloomington for work. This is a college town so while all the chains are here, mom n pop options are few. Then add that I only like NY style pizza, so IL is not for me. But, my favorite comfort food is spaghetti. And this is the place for me! The pasta is cooked perfectly al dente. The marinara is loaded with garlic and absolutely delicious! The meatballs are soft and moist and plenty of sauce to slather up with buttery garlic bread. The place was clean service was friendly. I'm sad I discovered this so late in my stay, but they just see me every day before I leave!

In Bloomington-Normal you have two real options for "quick" Italian (Fazoli's does NOT count!!!!). In the war between Avanti's and La Gondola, Avanti's will win on sheer scale and amount of food sold but La Gondola is the hands down winner for quality and what you get for the money. My usual order is the hot ham and cheese (way bigger and MUCH better than the Avanti's version) and the tortellini which is also much better than the Avanti's version. I will always feel I got much more for my dollar at La Gondola than I ever do at Avanti's. The Main Street location is....umm...charming...but the staff is great and you can see the entire food prep area so any concerns about cleanliness are pretty unfounded. The parking lot can be a bit tricky when it's snowy or the restaurant is busy but it's usually not tough and a quick drive around the block will get you going in any direction you want to head. La Gondola is certainly not haute cuisine, but it beats the hell out of Avanti's anyday.
